So you want a website. Whether that be a corporate website, or a blogging website, this guide will give you the basics to create a responsive website that works on all platforms and devices.
First things first, pick a really good business/blogger name. Seriously, make it a good one! In this day and age, most of the names you will think of will already be taken – by taken I mean they have already been snapped up by someone else, long before you ever imagined creating your own website. Pick a damn good memorable name that defines what your business/blog is all about.
Hosting. What is hosting? Why do I need it? How do I get it?
If you set up through Dreamhost, which I recommend you do, as its cheap and easy and painless (you can’t mess up), they will also let you pick your own domain name and everything, which I’ll get to in a bit.
Everyone has to host – hosting your website/blog basically means your paying for your own slice of internet real estate, everyone has to do it.
What I like about Dreamhost:
- It offers SSD hosting for Shared hosting without any extra cost.
- It offers free domain name with hosting.
- It’s quick to set up. Total cost for 1 year: only $69.
I have added a special Dreamhost promo link below, which will let you get 1 free domain and one-year unlimited hosting for only $69. If you want to increase your hosting package to 2 or 3 years, you will still be eligible for a $50 discount.
Once you’ve picked your hosting plan you will then have to create a Dreamhost account.
You will then be asked to choose your FREE domain. You can either create a new domain or use a domain name that you have already bought from another site. Just follow the instructions then click continue.
You will be asked to confirm your hosting plan again, followed by payment instructions. Simple.
Dreamhost will then email you a confirmation with all the details. It really is that easy.
HOW TO INSTALL WORDPRESS ON DREAMHOST HOSTING
Once you’ve registered with Dreamhost, you can log in to your Dreamhost web panel, & install WordPress with just one click. Follow the steps to set it up, install it to your new domain (your new website URL) & that’s you done!
Click on One Installs & here you will get options to Install WordPress.
Click on WordPress & you will then be prompted to select the domain, where you want to install WordPress. Do remember, your Dreamhost account lets you host unlimited websites. (So if you plan on buying more domains and installing WordPress on them, this is where you will find them listed).
Keep the check-box select for option Deluxe One-Click Install. This will auto-install essential plugins such as Jetpack, Akismet, WP Super cache. It also automatically secures your uploads folder. Click on Install it for me now. This will start installing WordPress on your domain name & in a few minutes you will receive an email confirmation. Follow the email where you need to create an account for your WordPress blog.
Click on Install WordPress & on the next page click on Login. Now, login using the WordPress credentials you have just created.

Easy peasy. Now you just need to install a theme layout and have a play around with the customisation features to make your website/blog personal.
